Eating out
Finding something good to eat at restaurants and with friends.
Eating out gets easier quickly, once you know where to look and what to ask.
Before you go
- Look at the menu online. Many restaurants mark vegan dishes.
- Use an app such as HappyCow to find places with vegan options nearby, especially when travelling.
- Suggest the place yourself when you’re meeting friends — then there’s no question you’ll find something.
Ordering
- Just ask. Staff are used to questions about ingredients, and many kitchens can adapt a dish.
- Know the hidden ingredients: butter, cheese, cream, egg in fresh pasta, meat or fish stock, fish sauce, honey.
- Some cuisines make it easy: Indian dal and chana masala (ask about ghee), Middle Eastern falafel and hummus, Ethiopian lentil stews, Chinese or Thai tofu dishes (ask about fish sauce), Italian pasta and pizza without cheese.
With friends
- Keep the focus on the company, not your plate.
- If you’re unsure there will be anything, eat a little beforehand.
- If something slips through, it happens. Veganism is about what is possible and practicable, not about being perfect.
