Family dinners
How to eat with your family without turning dinner into a debate.
Food is how many families show love, so a change in what you eat can feel personal to the people who cook for you. A little planning keeps dinners warm.
Before the meal
- Tell them early, and kindly — not at the table, and not as a surprise on the day.
- Offer to bring a dish, big enough to share. If everyone likes it, you’ve shown more than any argument could.
- Make it easy for whoever cooks. Point out what’s already vegan or easy to adapt: potatoes, rice, salads, vegetables, bread, many soups and sauces.
At the table
- Thank them for the effort, even if it isn’t perfect. Someone tried.
- Don’t debate over dinner. If questions come, answer briefly and offer to talk later: “Happy to talk about it another time — this is really good.” The questions section has short, calm answers if you need them.
- Remember where questions come from. Very often it’s worry, not attack — “Are you getting enough protein?” usually means “I care about you”.
Holidays
Traditions are about being together. You can keep the ritual and change the recipe — bring your own version of the dish everyone expects, and let it sit next to the original.
